چکیده

Ice export from the vast Arctic Siberian shelf is calculated using dO values and salinity data for water samples collected during the International Siberian Shelf Study between August and September 2008 (ISSS-08). The samples represent a wide range of salinities and dO values due to river water inputs and sea ice removal. We estimate the fraction of water that has been removed as ice by interpreting observed dO values and salinities as a result of mixing between river water and sea water end-members as well as to fractional ice removal. This method does not assume an ice end-member of fixed composition, which is especially important when applied on samples with large differences in salinity. The results show that there is net transport of ice from both the Laptev and the Eastern Siberian Seas, and in total 3000 km of sea ice is exported from the shelf. The annual total export of ice from the entire region, calculated from the residence time of water on the shelf, is estimated to be 860 km yr. Thus, changes in ice production on the shelf may have great impact on sea ice export from the Arctic Ocean.

Impact of a decreasing sea ice cover on the vertical export of particulate organic carbon in the northern Laptev Sea, Siberian Arctic Ocean

[1] Long-term sediment traps were deployed from September 2005 to August 2007 in the northern Laptev Sea to assess the annual variability in vertical export of particulate organic carbon (POC). The second year of deployment coincided with the record low in Arctic summer ice extent reached in 2007 that resulted in an increase in marine primary production over the Siberian shelves. POC export flu...

Wind-driven summer surface hydrography of the eastern Siberian shelf

[1] High interannual variability of summer surface salinity over the Laptev and East Siberian Sea shelves derived from historical records of the 1950s–2000s is attributed to atmospheric vorticity variations. In the cyclonic regime (positive vorticity) the eastward diversion of the Laptev Sea riverine water results in a negative salinity anomaly to the east of the Lena Delta and farther to the E...

Controls on Eurasian coastal sea ice formation, melt onset and decay from ERS scatterometry: regional contrasts and effects of river influx

Regional and local patterns in the formation, melt onset and disappearance of coastal first-year sea ice (FYI) are observed in the Eurasian Arctic using the C-band (5.3 GHz) European Remote Sensing Satellite (ERS) radar scatterometers. Near-daily time-series (1991–1999) of the radar backscatter coefficient normalized to an incident angle of 40‡ (s40) and the backscatter– incident angle relation...

Ice production and salt rejection of Laptev Sea polynyas, using model and remote sensing data

The Laptev Sea polynyas in the Siberian Arctic are well recognized as strong ice producers [1, 2] and may play a critical role with regards to sea ice volume changes in the Arctic. These flaw polynyas were studied during two seasonal cycles (2007 – 2009) by the Russian-German research project “Laptev Sea System” [3]. A focus was set on an investigation of the contribution of the West New Siberi...

Recent wind driven high sea ice area export in the Fram Strait contributes to Arctic sea ice decline

Arctic sea ice area has been decreasing for the past two decades. Apart from melting, the southward drift through Fram Strait is the main ice loss mechanism. We present high resolution sea ice drift data across 79 N from 2004 to 2010. Ice drift has been derived from radar satellite data and corresponds well with variability in local geostrophic wind. The underlying East Greenland current contri...
